Saturday Night Recap | Week 17

Dyson Dazzles In OT Thriller

Friday night, the two-time defending champion Buffalo Bandits defeated the Las Vegas Desert Dogs 13-10 at KeyBank Center. Shortly after hitting the showers, the victors boarded a bus for the nearly 300-mile journey through the Upstate New York night en route to the state capital of Albany. Saturday evening, just shy of 7,000 fans packed MVP Arena for a championship round rematch between the Bandits and the hometown FireWolves. And to say the least, this once did not disappoint, as the defending runner-up escaped with an 11-10 overtime win.

This conflict was nip and tuck throughout. That was until the FireWolves connected on six of the first seven second-half goals, positioning them with a 10-7 lead. But, since we’re talking about the reigning champs, of course, the fellas from Buffalo fought their way back with three consecutive scores, including the leveler by Josh Byrne with under two minutes remaining.

Come the bonus lacrosse session, rookie extraordinaire Dyson Williams elected to call it a night when connecting on a sizzling behind-the-back game-winner 8:08 into the fifth period.

The rookie phenom out of Duke posted a hat-trick, along with one assist. Alex Simmons, Tye Kurtz, Ethan Walker, and Johnathan Peshko each contributed a pair of goals to the cause.

On the losing Buffalo side. Byrne only scored that lone goal, though he did help his teammates on six assists. Dhane Smith, Ian MacKay, and Chase Fraser were responsible for two apiece in a disappointing defeat.

The star-studded pair of goalies very much lived up to the billing, with Doug Jamieson saving a remarkable 57 shots, while Matt Vinc knocked down an outstanding 44 projectiles—including his 11,000th career save.

What a game!

Toronto Looks Powerful on Marvel SuperHero Night

On Saturday night, the Wings extended their losing streak to seven games, courtesy of a 15-8 trouncing by the Toronto Rock. This game started to get out of hand from the outset, as the Rock hurried to an 8-2 lead at the halftime intermission. The Wings played better in the second 30 minutes, but never came within five goals, with the final tally sitting at a solid seven-score spread.

Chris Boushy scored three and helped on three others. Josh Dawick donated two goals and six assists, with Dan Craig underwriting a hat trick and one helper.

Sam LeClair was the lone bright spot for the Wings, notching a hat trick in defeat. No other Philly player scored more than a single goal, with Mitch Jones going goal-less, despite being on the giving end of three assists.

Toronto netminder Troy Holowchuk awed the capacity crowd at Paramount Fine Foods Centre, impeding 33 of 41 shots. Things did not go so well for Nick Damude, who was pulled in favor of back-up Deacan Knott.

The Seals Are Rolling

Last Sunday afternoon, the San Diego Seals put up a 20-spot on the Las Vegas Desert Dogs. Six days later, the Southern Californians followed that effort with a sweltering 16-goal performance, knocking off the host Calgary Roughnecks by a four-goal margin. When taking out the calculator, that comes out to 36 goals the last two times SD has taken the lacrosse field.

San Diego rode the wave to an early 5-2 lead before the Albertans clawed their way back to an eventual 7-7 tie after the first 30 minutes of play. The Seals kicked it into high gear come the second half, blasting 8 of the final 10 twine ticklers, including two stretches of four consecutive additions to the scoreboard.

Wes Berg is on a serious run, following up last week’s sock trick with a five-goal, three-assist implementation. In his return to his old stomping grounds, Zach Currier brought the swagger, notching three scores and two helpers. Ben McIntosh supplemented three goals and seven assists to his resume, while Rob Hellyer was feeling downright benevolent, as he put the wheels in motion on eight of his teammates’ goals.

Tanner Cook had a strong night for the losing club, posting four goals and one assist. Dane Dobbie and Jesse King collaborated on four goals and six assists in front of a disenchanted Calgary crowd of more than 11,000 at WestJet Field At Scotiabank Saddledome.

Amid a three-game winning streak, the Seals move to 8-6, while the Roughnecks morph into one game below .500.

Georgia Swarm @ Vancouver Warriors at Rogers Arena

Del Bianco Continues To Ignite The Warriors

Saturday’s westernmost matchup occurred in the beautiful city of Vancouver, where 9,435 British Columbians watched the local guys creep their way to an even 7-7 record, thanks to a 15-13 triumph over Lyle Thompson and the Georgia Swarm, who now also stand at 7-7.

With the skirmish tied 5-5 in the second quarter, the Warriors engraved five straight goals onto the scoresheet, setting up what would be a comfortable lead until Georgia decided to make it interesting as the game drew near its conclusion. At this juncture, the Swarm whirled three in a row, capped by a Lyle Thompson goal which brought the proceedings to a 14-13 differential with a mere two minutes remaining. But, just when it looked like all the momentum was on the Southerner’s side, Owen Grant secured victory for the Warriors when directing the vulcanized rubber ball into the vacated net with a measly 10 seconds displayed on the clock.

Keegan Bal was all-world on this night, scoring three and supplying a whopping nine assists. Marcus Klarich snared a hat-trick, alongside two assists, while Ryan Martel added four goals and one assist to his resume.

The aforementioned Mr. Thompson had his typical robust night at the office, scoring four and assisting on two more. Longtime running mate Shayne Jackson was accountable for three scores and two helpers, but it was not quite enough for the road squad.

Newly acquired Christian Del Bianco moved to 2-0 in a Vancouver jersey, prohibiting 43 of 56 shots.

SUNDAY
